How to Naturally Soften Clothes Without Fabric Softener

Fabric softener might make your clothes feel softer but besides that, that bunch of chemicals isn’t doing us any real favors.

Not only does it coat your fabrics with synthetic fragrances and potentially irritating compounds, but it can also trigger skin sensitivities and create residue buildup in your washing machine that can clog dispensers and cause mechanical problems—all while costing significantly more than simple natural alternatives.

So here are a few of the main laundry hacks that will soften your clothes with simple ingredients while being much easier on your skin, washer, and wallet.

Here we go!

1. White Vinegar

White vinegar is the gold standard for natural fabric softening. The acetic acid breaks down mineral deposits and soap residue that make clothes feel stiff.

And NO, it will not make your clothes smell like vinegar, trust me!

How to use:

  • Add 1/2 to 1 cup white vinegar to your fabric softener dispenser
  • For hard water, use a full cup

2. Baking Soda

Baking soda balances pH levels in wash water, helping detergent work better and preventing stiffness.

How to use:

  • Add 1/2 cup baking soda directly to the washing machine drum with clothes

3. Wool Dryer Balls

Wool dryer balls physically agitate clothes in the dryer which helps fluff them and make them soft. They’re great!

How to use:

  • Add 3-6 wool dryer balls to your dryer with wet clothes
  • They also reduce drying time by up to 25%

It is commonly recommended to use essential oils on the dryer balls but not only does this not work (the dryer evaporates the oils) but they can be dangerous in the dryer if too much is used.

4. Key Washing Techniques

Simply washing your clothes the right way, goes a long way!

It will not only help soften your clothes but extend their life as well.

Here are the 3 golden rules.

  1. Use proper water temperature: Warm water is best as it helps completely dissolve detergent and prevent buildup which can cause stiffness.
  2. Don’t use too much detergent: Excess detergent leaves residue. Use slightly less than package directions suggest. 1-2 tablespoons is actually enough!
  3. Don’t over-dry: Remove clothes while slightly damp and finish air-drying. Over-drying makes fabrics stiff.

Important Notes

For towels: Skip any fabric softener (natural or commercial) as it reduces absorbency. Use only wool dryer balls for fluffiness.

For delicates: Use only 1/4 cup vinegar and cool water.

These natural methods are more effective than commercial softeners, cost pennies per load, and won’t irritate sensitive skin or damage fabrics over time.
