But a good cup of coffee is much more than just the quality of coffee… If you’re someone who uses creamer, then you know just how much your coffee creamer can make or break a good cup.
As we’ve said before ingredients matter.
Coffee creamer brands are notorious for deceptive labels and hidden ingredients.
That’s why it’s so important to understand ingredients and know which ones to avoid, as well as which brands are actually hitting the mark on healthy creamer.
We’re sharing the 5 healthiest coffee creamer options for all you coffee lovers. 🤎
and by the way, if you’re drinking decaf, be careful and choose the right one. Many decaf options are processed with harmful chemicals.
Creamer Ingredients To Avoid
So while I won’t go through each and every brand you need to avoid I will tell you which ingredients to avoid.
Next time you’re in the store, look through the ingredients of some of the most popular creamers and I promise you, you’ll find some of these ingredients on their labels.
- Natural Flavors: It may sound healthy and even natural, but in reality, it’s neither. Natural flavors contain a mix of various chemicals that companies don’t have to disclose. They can cause allergic reactions or sensitivities in some people. Not only is it deceptive but it’s straight-up manipulative.
- Artificial Sweeteners (Including Corn Syrup): Common artificial sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, and saccharin can have negative effects on your gut health and may lead to headaches, digestive issues, and even metabolic disturbances.
- High Amounts of Sugar: Many creamers contain 5-6 grams of sugar per tablespoon, which can add up quickly. Excessive sugar intake is linked to weight gain, increased risk of heart disease, and blood sugar spikes.
- Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils: These oils contain trans fats, which are linked to heart disease and inflammation. They’re often used to create a creamy texture but come at a significant health cost.
- GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms): GMOs are often found in the corn, soy, and sugar beet products used in creamers. While research is ongoing, some studies suggest that GMOs may have negative effects on health and the environment.
- Soybean Oil: Soybean oil is commonly used in creamers, but it’s often highly processed and may contain GMOs. It can also be inflammatory due to its high omega-6 fatty acid content.
- Artificial Colors: These are added to make creamers look more appealing, but they have no nutritional value and can cause allergic reactions or hyperactivity, especially in children.
- Carrageenan: Carrageenan is a thickener derived from seaweed, but it has been linked to digestive issues and inflammation. It’s often found in non-dairy creamers.
- Mono and Diglycerides: These are emulsifiers that help blend fat and water in creamers, but they are often derived from hydrogenated oils, which can contain trans fats.
Avoiding these ingredients can help you choose a healthier coffee creamer that won’t have hidden, potentially harmful effects on your body.
