nondairy milks at a grocery store

Did you know that nearly half of American families (41-44%) have switched from dairy to nondairy alternatives like almond milk?

But unfortunately a lot of these nondairy alternatives are loaded with questionable ingredients.

Switching to healthy non dairy alternatives doesn’t mean adding mysterious additives to you diet. There are healthy options out there!!

Today I’m cutting through the confusion to share the 5 healthiest almond milks you can find in stores near you!

5 Healthiest Almond Milks🥛

  1. Three Trees Organic Almond Milk
  2. Malk Organic Almond Milk
  3. Califia Organics Pure Almond Milk
  4. New Barn Organic Unsweetened Almond Milk
  5. Elmhurst Milked Almonds

What Makes a Healthy Almond Milk?

When selecting a quality almond milk, several key factors seperate the truly healthy options from the rest.

First things first, keep it plain and simple with unsweetened and unflavored varieties. This will help you avoid added sugar and artificial flavor nonsense.

Plus it’s not easy finding flavored or sweetened milks(dairy or nondairy) without additives. So your best bet is to just avoid flavors and sweeteners all together.

Speaking of additives, avoid any milks with gums and thickeners that are simply put… just unnecessary.

If you prefer flavored almond milk, consider making homemade almond milk using natural ingredients like pure vanilla extract or dates for sweetness.

The only ingredients that need to be in your almond milk are almonds and water, and depending on preference, salt.

Lastly, look for organic options to avoid pesticide that are often involved in the growing and harvesting of almonds.

This by far out of all the healthy almond milks is the most available option. Not to mention, it’s also the cheapest. This is the brand we probably buy the most out of the top 5.

Holding not only the organic certification but also the the ROC(Regenerative Organic Certfification), not any easy one to achieve but so very important to have and pretty impressive.

The ROC Certification means that this almond milk comes from farms that go beyond organic by being active and intentional about healing the environment through practices that rebuild soil health, conserve water, and support biodiversity.

Not to mention there’s no additives here either just three simple ingredients; filtered water, organic almonds and sea salt.

Lastly, Elmhurst Milked Almonds. While not organic, this option is made of only 2 ingredients, almonds and water and has absolutely no gums or emulsifiers.

What makes this milk even more appealing is its slightly high protein content, compared to other brands.

Where to buy: Whole Foods, Sprouts, Fresh Market, select Target stores, and online via Amazon and Elmhurst’s website

Price : $0.19-0.23 per ounce ($6.99-7.99 for 32 oz)

Disclaimer: While all of these options are fantastic that doesn’t mean every brand we’ve discussed only provides the cleanest almond milk.

For example, we love Calfifia but their nonorganic almond milk option stoops well below out standards. However, their organic options include organic oat milk and their coconut milk(my personal favorite) are great.

califia organic and non organic nutrition label and ingredient comparison

I say this to say, just be aware and always read ingredient labels for yourself. There are brands that offer organic nondairy alternatives but contain gums, filler, natural flavors and other additives.

We’ve also found that brands can even change their ingredients… yeah I know, sneaky isn’t it?

So just be on the lookout and remember read the ingredients labels for yourself! The fewer the ingredients the better.
