DIY Natural Blush Made From Beets (+video)

Natural blush I made

We all know nature has a way of making things beautiful but did you know that you could use very natural ingredients to make some of the best makeup products?

For thousands of years, way before mainstream makeup, our ancestors used beets and other natural tinting agents to spice up their look.

Like many old ways, beet blush is coming back! Let’s get into how and what you’ll need to make a natural makeup blush made from beets!!

Benefits of Natural Blush Powder

Using blush from beets can give you really awesome natural benefits. Beets are rich in antioxidants and vitamins like vitamins B9 and C.

And not to mention, beets are great at tinting and coloring which makes them so perfect for blush. You can literally make so many different shades for any skin tone or style!

When you make your blush at home you have the freedom to make as many different shades as you like. In my video, I’ll show you how to make three different shades light-medium, medium-neutral shade, and deep shade.

What You’ll Need

Ingredients:

  • 5-6 Beets(you’ll end up drying them out and grinding them down to powder or you can buy beet powder)
  • Arrowroot powder for light shades
  • Cacao powder for more neutral tones
  • Coffee(finely) grounds for darker deep shades

The most important thing to note is that you want all your ingredients to be as finely powdered as possible. This makes a big difference in how the ingredients mix and how the final product turns out.

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Glass jars for blush powder
  • Tbsp, 1/2 Tbsp, 1/2 Tsp
  • Powder Sifter
  • Powder Grinder
  • Bowls for each of your ingredients

Instructions:

  • You can use premade beet powder or thinly slice and dehydrate your beets.
    • You can dehydrate them in the sun for about 10-12 hours or dehydrate them in an air fryer/oven at 110 for about 10 hours.
    • The time it takes to fully dehydrate varies on how thinly you slice your beets.
  • Once beets are fully dried, you can grind them into powder using any grinder that will grind them into a very fine consistency.
  • Mix the ingredients together(make sure all the powders are finely grated)
  • After the ingredients are mixed, use a powder sifter to separate the fine powder from any extra clumps
  • Once all that remains is the completely mixed fine blush powder add it back into your glass blush containers and enjoy!!

To achieve deeper or lighter shades you can adjust beet powder and arrowroot powder amounts to best fit you!

The shelf life for this blush is 2-3 years, except for the recipe using cacao powder which usually gives you a shelf life of about 1 year. Just be aware of the “best used by” date on the cacao powder packaging. Also never store this blush powder in direct sunlight as that can deteriorate and affect ingredient quality.

Making Different Shades

The difference in shades depends heavily on the ingredients paired with the beet powder. For lighter shades you’d use arrowroot powder and for light-medium shades.

For medium shades, I use less or no arrowroot powder depending on the desired shade and for more earthy-neutral tones I like to add in cacao powder.

For darker skin tones I love to add in finely ground coffee. Not only does it smell amazing but it gives you a deeper but not too dramatic shade.

Recipe 1: Light to Medium Skin Tone

  • 3 tablespoons of beet powder
  • ½  teaspoon arrowroot powder

Instructions:

  1. Combine the arrowroot powder, and beet powder in a mixing bowl.
  2. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
  3. Adjust the ratio of beet powder for a lighter or more intense color, as desired.
  4. Strain out any clumps using a powder sifter.
  5. Transfer the mixture to an airtight container for storage.

Recipe 2: Medium Skin Tone(More Earthy Blush Color)

  • 3 tablespoons of beet powder
  • ½  tablespoon cocoa powder

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the beet powder and cocoa powder.
  2. Blend the ingredients thoroughly until the color is evenly distributed.
  3. Adjust the ratio of cocoa powder for a deeper shade suitable for medium skin tones.
  4. Strain out any clumps using a powder sifter.
  5. Store the blush powder in a sealed container away from moisture and sunlight.

Recipe 3: Dark Skin Tone

  • 3 tablespoons of beet powder
  • ½  tablespoon finely grown coffee powder

Instructions:

  1. Mix the beet powder and fine-ground coffee in a bowl until well combined.
  2. Increase the amount of coffee ground powder for richer pigmentation.
  3. Blend the ingredients thoroughly until the color is evenly distributed.
  4. Strain out any clumps using a powder sifter.
  5. Transfer the blush powder to a clean, dry container with a tight-fitting lid for storage.

Why I Use Arrowroot Powder Instead Of Cornstarch

A lot of DIY blush powder recipes contain cornstarch but I prefer to swap out cornstarch for a more natural ingredient, arrowroot powder.

Arrowroot powder, sometimes used as flour for a delicate cake, blends smoothly into blush and keeps it on your skin longer.

Cornstarch, on the other hand, is a bit rougher, like regular flour, and might not blend as nicely or look as smooth on your skin.

Arrowroot is also better for sensitive skin because it’s gentler.

Now It’s Your Turn To Try It!

You can use natural ingredients, even vegetables, to make amazing products you’ll love!

Don’t be afraid to try out different shades using your own ingredient amounts. I love that this blush is so easy to make and adjust to fit every skin tone and desired look.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy this blush just as much as I do!
