The Ingredients

cocoa butter, coconut oil, shea butter, glycerin, tapioca starch, jojoba oil

All of the ingredients are non toxic, organic, and have amazing health benefits for your skin.

Most conventional body butters out there have unregulated toxic chemicals like fragrances, dyes, and parabens that you just don’t want any part of.

Remember your skin and hair are like a backdoor to your bloodstream!

Here’s all the amazing benefits each of these ingredients provide:

Cocoa Butter

1/3 of the three main ingredients, cocoa butter (although a little hard to cut) is what gives this recipe its to-die-for chocolate smell. On top of that, it’s perfect for the skin!

  • High in antioxidants
  • Improves signs of aging
  • Heals sensitive skin improves
  • Can improve scarring
  • Hydrating skin

Shea Butter

2/3 of the three main ingredients, shea butter is a staple in the body butter game, providing all kinds of benefits to you and your soon-to-be hydrated skin.

  • Known for moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Rich in fatty acids and vitamins
  • Can help improve skin elasticity

Coconut Oil

The last but not least of the three amigos. Coconut oil is my buddy as I literally use it for everything. I use it to cook, bake, and as a moisturizer. Its properties make it a must for body butters.

  • Antimicrobial and moisturizing
  • Can help with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis

Jojoba Oil

Probably my favorite skin-health oil out there, jojoba (it’s ho-ho-ba!) is the best hydrating but absorbable oil out there.

  • Very similar to the natural oils produced by our skin, making it easily absorbable
  • Can help regulate oil production and is suitable for all skin types, including oily skin.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties that help fight dry skin and eczema

Tapioca Starch

This is what helps cut down on the greasiness of the butter.

You can replace this with cornstarch, arrowroot, or kaolin clay as a 1:1 substitute but we like Tapioca starch as it was pretty cheap to get compared to arrowroot powder and we found in our research that it was much less likely to clog pores compared to cornstarch.

  • Reduces the greasiness of the body butter
  • Helps absorb excess oil on the skin
  • Acts as a thickener and provides a silky, smooth consistency to the product

Glycerin

This is the secret ingredient that helps absorb the moisture from the butters.

  • Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it helps retain moisture in the skin
  • Hydrates the skin, aids in wound healing, and protects against irritants.
  • Helps bind ingredients together and improves the shelf life of the body butter

Cost of Ingredients

You can get all of these items on Amazon for a total of about $87. While that might seem like a lot, keep in mind:

Equipment

  • 1 Stainless steel mixing bowl *or heat-safe glass bowl
  • 1 Scale
  • 1 A pot
  • 1 Cake batter mixer
  • 1 Mixing utensil- spatula, large spoon, etc.
  • 1 Tbsp measurement

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Measure out 8 oz of cocoa butter and cut into smaller chunks and place in stainless steel bowl
  • Measure out 8 oz of shea butter, cut into smaller chunks, and place in the stainless steel bowl
  • (Double Boiler Method) Take a pot and fill it with about 2-3 inches of water and place it on the stove to boil
  • Once it begins to boil, place the stainless steel mixing bowl on top of the pot and stir the butters until they are fully melted.
  • Remove stainless steel bowl from the pot and add 8 oz of unrefined coconut oil (we add this after to bring the butters back closer to room temperature)
  • Place bowl in freezer for 20 minutes until the mixture has a thin top layer that has hardened but is still liquid underneath this (this time might vary for different variables such as bowl used, type of freezer, etc.).
  • While the bowl is in the freezer, mix your 2 tbsp of glycerin and 6 tbsp of jojoba oil to prepare them for mixture. Also prepare your 6 tbsp of tapioca starch in another container. (It is good to have these ready to go since the mixture continues to harden after coming out of the freezer).
  • After 20 minutes, or until your mixture looks like the provided picture, take your bowl out of the freezer and begin mixing with the cake batter mixer
  • Add in your glycerin and jojoba oil and continue to blend
  • Add in your tapioca starch and continue to blend
  • Once tapioca starch is fully mixed into the butter, begin to slowly mix together the butter with a spatula or large spoon. The mixture will continue to harden and will become the final product!

Notes

*If you don’t have a stainless steel bowl for the double boiler method, you can use a heat-proof glass bowl. If you use a glass bowl, be sure to take it out of the freezer a few minutes earlier than we have listed as glass tends to hold temperatures better than stainless steel. This means it will make the butters harden quicker after you take it out of the freezer, so taking it out a few minutes early will help combat this.
Also, we don’t recommend microwaving any of the ingredients as this will harm the nutrients!
