What Makes a Crib Non-Toxic?

When choosing a crib for your little one, the safety factor often takes center stage.

Two primary factors define a non toxic crib: the elimination of harmful chemicals and the third-party certifications to back that up.

Harmful Chemicals

Many traditional cribs and mattresses on the market come with a cocktail of chemical substances that can pose significant health risks, especially to your little ones.

Among these are Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, which are harmful substances found in everyday household items. Yes, even furniture.

These compounds can include a variety of different chemicals, including formaldehyde(a known carcinogen) and flame retardants. 👎🏽

Flame retardants, while sounding beneficial contain chemicals that have been linked to negative health effects such as hormone disruption.

Even the paint used on furniture, like cribs, can be a source of VOCs.

If it’s not a non toxic crib paint, it can emit harmful fumes, potentially causing headaches, allergies, or other health problems over time due to their off-gassing.

Beyond VOCs, there are other chemicals like BPA (Bisphenol A), PFAS (Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances), phthalates, and lead, each carrying their own health effects.

Certifications

Third-party certifications and Safety Certifications are really important to look for when shopping around for a crib.

Third-party certifications like GREENGUARD Gold ensure that VOC levels are in check and are very low(nontoxic level) or they aren’t in a product at all.

Safety certifications like the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) mean a product has been tested and meets or passes strict safety standards.

Not only do these certifications give you peace of mind and a sense of security about the products you buy but they also help you to not just take a brand for what they claim to be true but fully trust their claims because they’re backed by certifications.

Are IKEA Cribs Non Toxic?

Unlike our recommended brands above that use multiple third-party certifications to verify their non-toxic claims, IKEA doesn’t.

They offer little to no certifications that give us any assurance.

While IKEA’s cribs do comply with the US 16 CFR 1219 standard for crib safety, this refers only to the way the crib is built (that it won’t fall apart).

IKEA does not give any real real evidence that low or non toxic materials are used. However, they do use uncertified engineered wood and mystery paint. We call it mystery paint because there’s no descriptions of what it’s actually made of.

are ikea cribs non toxic

So while IKEA is making some strides toward non-toxicicity, they have some work to do to prove their commitment to true non-toxic products.

Final Thoughts

We’ve discovered the best cribs that offer safety, functionality, and style.

Picking out a crib can be tough, but with this guide, you’re all set to make the best choice that’s safest for your kiddo.

When should you stop using a crib?

You should stop using a crib when your child is 35 inches tall or begins to climb out, typically around 18 to 24 months of age.

Are wooden cribs safe?

Wooden cribs are safe if they meet current safety standards, are properly assembled, and are free from recalls, sharp edges, or spaces where a baby’s head could get trapped. Metal woods are also a good option.

What is the safest material for a baby mattress?

The safest materials for a baby mattress are firm, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic materials like organic cotton, wool, or natural latex that meet safety standards and do not contain harmful chemicals.
